This set of Henry Starck pipes are all original African blackwood, with button mounts in real ivory in beautiful condition with no cracks or stains. The woodwork has no combs, but a continuous series of beads as decoration. This style is very obvious as a Starck trademark design. The Starck family were originally flute makers, brought over to London by the German composer Handel, when he lived there around 1870. Henry Starck became a pipemaker when he was persuaded to make bagpipes by William Ross, when Ross was piper to Queen Victoria in the 1880's. Starcks continued to make pipes until 1963. The company carries on in the form of Les Cowell of David Niall & Co. ''Henry Starck had a tremendous impact and influence on the design and manufacture of bagpipe. Starck beading is arguably the most defined and concise in the history of the instrument. Their attention to detail also sets very high standards. Starck Bagpipes that survive today represent an outstanding example of the higher end of the craft''. Ringo Bowen The Bagpipe Museum |
